It is a 105 m long vessel with an installed capacity of 2,450 tonnes powered by two 9,100 kW diesel engines designed to achieve a maximum speed of 26 knots.

"Sarthak" is the fourth in the series of five  Offshore Patrol Vessels (OPVs) which will significantly boost the maritime security and defense of the nation. OPV is a long-range surface vessel capable of operating in the maritime areas of India, including areas with helicopter operational capability.

Their roles include coastal and offshore patrolling, policing, control, and surveillance in India's maritime areas, anti-smuggling, and anti-piracy operations with limited wartime roles.

It is indigenously designed by M/s "Goa Shipyard Limited" (GSL) in line with the "Make in India" approach.

It has about 70% indigenous equipment, thus providing the necessary impetus to the Indian shipbuilding industry, and is a major effort towards achieving the goal of a self-reliant India campaign.

The ship is equipped with state-of-the-art navigation and communication equipment, sensors, and machinery.

The ship is designed to carry twin-engine helicopters, four high-speed boats, and one inflatable boat for swift boarding and search and rescue operations.

The ship is also capable of carrying "Limited Pollution Response Equipment" to combat oil spill pollution at sea.

The ship is deployed to safeguard the nation's maritime interests, including surveillance of the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), coastal security, and other duties enshrined in the Coast Guard Charter.

The concept of the formation of ICG came into existence after the 1971 war and the visionary blueprint for a multi-pronged Coast Guard was prepared by the Rustomjee Committee.

It has jurisdiction over the territorial waters of India including the Contiguous Zone and the Exclusive Economic Zone.

It is responsible for protecting the marine environment in India's maritime territories and acts as coordinating authority for oil spill response in Indian waters.
