Context
Recently, the Russian company informed that India is likely to receive the
first of two additional Krivak-class stealth frigates being built by Russia in
mid-2023.
Background
Inter-Governmental Agreement (IGA):
A $1 billion deal was signed between Russia and India in 2016 for direct
procurement along with two other frigates to be built in India by
Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL).
- This will result in a transfer of technology to India and promote Make in India.
- The first two warships will be built at the Yantar shipyard in Kaliningrad, Russia.
- In India, the other two will be manufactured in GSL.
Definition of FRIGATE
- A frigate is a type of warship. In different eras, the roles and capabilities of ships classified as frigates have been extremely diverse.

About Talwar Stealth FRIGATE
- The Krivak or Talwar stealth frigates are a series of warships and guard ships (patrol boats) built in the Soviet Union, mainly for the Soviet Navy since 1970.
- The new Talwar stealth frigates will be similar to the last three warships of Yantar - INS Teg, Tarkash, and Trikand - in terms of engine and armament configuration.

Russian warship Krivak will be available by mid-2023
India will get the first two warships of the Russian Krivak class by

Krivak-class stealth frigates are expected to be delivered by mid-2023. The

Two of these frigates will be directly sourced from Russia and two will be
manufactured by Goa Shipyard Limited.
