DRDO successfully test-fired BrahMos missile in Andaman and Nicobar Islands Group

On March 23, 2022, Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) successfully test-fired the BrahMos surface-to-surface supersonic cruise missile in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands Group.

Air Chief Marshal BR Chaudhary and other defense officials were present to witness the missile test. Earlier, on 8 December 2021, the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile air version was successfully test-fired in the Air Force fighter aircraft Sukhoi 30 MK-1.

The missile destroyed the enemy's base meeting the set standards. The BrahMos supersonic cruise missile fitted in the Sukhoi 30 MK-1 fighter jet is completely indigenously developed.

Brahmos

BrahMos is a joint venture of the Defense Research and Development Organization and NPOM of Russia. It is named after the Brahmaputra river of India and the Moskva river of Russia. It is a two-stage (strong charge motor in the main stage and fluid ramjet in the second) missile.

It is a multiplatform missile i.e. it can be launched with precision from land, air, and sea, and a multi-capacity missile, which works in any weather, day and night.

It works on the principle of 'fire and forgets' i.e. it does not require guidance after launch. BrahMos is one of the fastest cruise missiles, it currently operates with a speed of Mach 2.8, which is almost 3 times the speed of sound.
