The Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) on Saturday successfully conducted the first hot test of the System Demonstration Model (SDM) of the Gaganyaan Service Module Propulsion System. This test was done at ISRO Propulsion Complex in Mahendragiri, Tamil Nadu.

According to ISRO, the systems are working properly. It is working as per our estimate. Apart from this, it is planned to conduct many such tests in different situations. Circumstances will also be kept different in this.

The previous mission was not successful

Earlier, just before August 15, the launch of ISRO's EOS-03 satellite had failed. This had dealt a severe blow to this mission. ISRO's ambitious mission could not be completed due to engine failure. It was to monitor the earth from space, that is why it was also being called India's fastest eyes, but the mission remained incomplete.

ISRO had launched the Earth observation satellite EOS-03 via GSLV-F10 at 5:43 am on 12 August from the Satish Dhawan Space Center in Sriharikota. It progressed successfully in the first two stages, but in the third stage, its cryogenic engine malfunctioned.

The first mission of the year took place in February

Earlier on February 28, ISRO successfully carried out the first mission of the year. India's rocket took off from the Sriharikota space center on February 28 carrying a Brazilian satellite for the first time. India's PSLV (Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle) C-51 carrying Brazil's Amazonia-1 and 18 other satellites took off from the Sriharikota Space Center. The picture of Prime Minister Narendra Modi was engraved on the top panel of this spacecraft.

Key points

About Gaganyaan Mission:

  • Gaganyaan is a mission of the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO).
  • Three space missions will be sent into orbit.
  • Of these three missions, 2 will be unmanned, while one will be manned.
  • The human space flight program, called the Orbital Module, will have three Indian astronauts, including a woman.
  • This mission will cover 300-400 km from Earth for 5-7 days. It will orbit the Earth in a low earth orbit at an altitude of

The payload will include:

  • Crew Module - A spacecraft carrying a man.
  • Service module - powered by two liquid-propellant engines.
  • It will be equipped with an emergency exit and emergency mission abort system.

Launch:

The three-stage GSLV Mk III will be used for the launch of Gaganyaan, which is capable of launching heavy satellites. It is noteworthy that GSLV Mk III is also called Launch Vehicle Mark-3 or LVM 3).

Training in Russia:

  • In June 2019, ISRO's Human Space Flight Center and the Russian government-owned Glavkosmos signed a contract for the training of Indian astronauts, including Russia's support in the selection of candidates, medical examination of selected passengers, and space training.
  • The selected candidates as cosmonauts will study in detail the systems of the Soyuz manned spacecraft, as well as train in a short-term weightlessness mode on the Il-76MDK aircraft.
  • Soyuz is a Russian spacecraft that carries people to and back to the space station and supplies other materials.
  • The Il-76MDK is a military transport aircraft specially designed for parabolic flights of trainee astronauts and space tourists.

Importance:

  • It will help in raising the level of science and technology in the country and motivate the youth.
  • Various agencies, laboratories, industries, and departments will be involved in the Gaganyaan mission.
  • This will help in improving industrial development.
  • The government has recently announced the formation of a new organization IN-SPACe in order to improve private participation in the space sector.
  • It will help in the development of technology for social benefits.
  • It will help in promoting international cooperation.
  • For many countries, one International Space Station (ISS) may not be enough as the regional ecosystem also needs to be taken into account, so Gaganyaan's mission will focus on regional needs – food, water, and energy security.

Other upcoming projects in India:

  • Chandrayaan-3 Mission: India has planned a new lunar mission Chandrayaan-3 which is likely to be launched in the year 2021.
  • Shukrayaan Mission: ISRO is also planning a mission to the planet Venus, which has been tentatively named Shukrayaan.
